The Adam Redfern Memorial Fund

The Adam Redfern Memorial Fund was set up in memory of much-loved DMU colleague, Journalism alumnus and fitness enthusiast, Adam Redfern, who died suddenly of a cardiac arrest while out jogging in March 2021, aged 28.

Adam was described as “the best of DMU in one person”. During his time as an undergraduate, whilst still achieving a First, he immersed himself in student life. He was involved heavily with Demon Media (he became Editor of The Demon and presented sports output on Demon FM). He engaged regularly with the University’s partners, Leicester City F.C. and Leicester Tigers and was instrumental in encouraging a number of his fellow students to sign-up for Demon Media. Adam also represented DMU Men’s Football Club throughout his time as an undergraduate.

The Fund supports students at DMU through a number of ways, such as a third year scholarship, and the Grant Scheme.

Through the Grant Scheme student clubs, societies, and staff groups can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to support projects not usually funded by the University or Students’ Union, with both immediate and lasting benefits. The scheme also supports individuals with talents or passions, such as sport, arts, or research, helping them pursue opportunities that enhance their skills, student experience, and future employability.

  1. Group Grants

Applications are invited from all formally recognised student clubs and societies at DMU, as well as staff groups. A grant of up to £1,000 can be sought for projects which will not ordinarily be funded by University or Students Union budgets. The initiative must deliver both immediate and lasting (legacy) impacts, which will benefit both the group as a whole and the DMU experience of its members as individuals.

Any group is limited to one application per academic year.

Previous beneficiaries include; DMU Rowing Club, who purchased sliders to enable rowing machines to be linked together, allowing crews to still train in unison even when they are not on the water and DMU Barbell, who were able to acquire an additional competition-level power bar, thus allowing more members to train with high-quality equipment at one time.

Application forms can be obtained by emailing adamredfernfund@gmail.com who will also be happy to provide any further information required.
  2. Individual Grants

The Scheme will support applications which meet one of the following criteria:
    1. The applicant possess a particular talent, perhaps in sport, design or performing arts and requires financial support to fulfil an opportunity to enhance their skills and reach a wider audience. To illustrate, we have previously supported a lacrosse player who had the opportunity to represent her country (Slovakia) at an international tournament and a DMU powerlifter, who went on to win gold at the 2025 World Student Championships held in Turkey.
    2. The applicant has a passion for a particular subject or interest, which they wish to explore further by carrying out additional research and investigation, or perhaps attending a high-profile event; thus, enhancing both their student experience and future employability.

Individuals may submit one application per academic year, with a maximum amount per application of £500.
